The Technical Services Team is seeking an enthusiastic, experienced and technically capable Engineering Technician to join our team and provide high-quality technical support across a diverse range of undergraduate teaching, laboratory, research and student project activities.

The role will provide practical engineering support across a broad range of disciplines, with a particular focus on the preparation, operation and maintenance of specialist laboratory and workshop equipment, facilities and experimental activities.

Working closely with academic and technical colleagues, the successful candidate will help ensure practical activities are delivered safely, efficiently and to a high standard.

The role will involve supporting the setup and delivery of practical teaching sessions, laboratory experiments, engineering tests and student projects, while providing technical guidance and support to students and colleagues. The post holder will also contribute to the installation, commissioning, operation, maintenance and modification of specialist equipment, as well as the design and manufacture of bespoke rigs, fixtures, prototypes and experimental apparatus to support teaching, research and development activities.

There will also be opportunities to support robotics, automation, programming and control activities, including the operation, development and integration of robotic and automated systems.

About You

You will be a technically skilled and hands-on engineering professional, ideally having completed an Engineering Apprenticeship or holding an equivalent technical qualification. You bring practical experience from a related engineering environment and are confident working across a broad range of equipment and processes.

You will have strong problem-solving ability and sound technical judgement, able to make effective, cost-aware decisions when supporting complex industrial and research activities. Your communication skills will enable you to work closely with students, academics, technical colleagues, project teams, external partners and visitors, ensuring their needs are understood and delivered to a high standard. 

Adaptable and highly organised, you will thrive in a varied environment where priorities can change quickly. You’re capable of working both independently and as part of a collaborative team, managing your workload to meet deadlines and support multiple stakeholders. Health and safety will be second nature to you — you’ll understand its importance in engineering and be confident guiding others to work safely.
