About the Role

The Department of Economics is looking to appoint a Research Assistant with a strong background in economics and micro econometrics to work alongside Professor Sonia Bhalotra.

 

The research will be related to labour markets, gender, families, health (including mental health) and institutions. Current projects include analysis of administrative and survey data sets, field experiments and survey and lab experiments. The post is funded by the ERC project ‘Generating new Evidence to Address Violence Against Women: Realising Women’s Rights’ which entails looking at the labour market, mental health and institutions among other things.

 

The individual appointed will have the opportunity to work on more than one research project, undertaking a range of tasks including data creation, data analysis, survey design, experimental design, and writing.

 

The position is particularly suitable for someone interested in pursuing a PhD in Economics or related fields. The Research Assistant will benefit from mentoring from the Principal Investigator and will have the opportunity to develop several skills useful for conducting academic research.

 

The desired start date for this role is 1 November 2026, although this can be flexible.  The contract is a fixed term contract till 30 September 2027, with the possibility to extend, depending on grant funding. The post can be made part-time (minimum of 0.4 FTE, 2 days a week) if this is the preference of the candidate, please indicate when applying if so.

About You

We require an individual who has an interest in the research area, who is pro-active and willing to work as part of a team.  

 

The post holder will work closely with the Principal Investigator (Professor Sonia Bhalotra) on research as outlined above.

 

You will be encouraged to propose ideas and utilise your own initiative to initiate each stage of the research project.

 

The post holder should have a strong first degree in Economics, Data Science or Computer Science. A masters degree or equivalent experience in relevant data analysis is desirable. 

 

The post holder will demonstrate excellent quantitative (econometrics and data analysis) and literary (read and writing) skills and extensive knowledge of research methods and techniques.

 

You are likely to be involved in research that will require the following; accessing new data sources, cleaning and visualising data, analysing large and complex data sets, coding and designing experiments in the lab, online and in the field.

 

You will also be required to conduct literature and database searches and contribute to the production of research reports and publications. 

 

The job will involve close collaboration and frequent interactions with the Principal Investigator, the research team and collaborators.
